Ian Downing ~ Ski Shop
I did a variety of CBL internships during my time at MHS and it was by far the most impactful educational experience I had as a student. I was on the fence about following my interest in boat mechanics or the ski industry. After doing a CBL at a boat repair shop it became clear that my previous CBL at the local ski shop was where my career should be focused. My CBL journey at the local ski shop, Peter Glenn, turned into a part time job and set me on my way. After continuing my education around the ski industry out in Colorado I had the unique opportunity to return to Montpelier and start my own ski shop, SlopeStyle Ski & Ride. This was a dream I had all through college but never thought it would all happen so fast. I partnered with my former CBL mentor Gordie Eurich to open our store in 2010. He has since retired and is living his dream of skiing every day in Utah. Now as a direct result of seeing the impact the CBL program had on my career trajectory I am on the other side of the relationship. We have welcomed many MHS students since we started in 2010 to join us for their CBL or flexible pathways education. It is a very rewarding aspect to help others find what may or may not be their chosen trajectory in life. I could not be more grateful for the vision MHS faculty had back then for getting students out in the community, it certainly shaped my life more than I can express.
